Abstract: The materials in this collection span the years from 1915 to1955. The majority of the collection is from the 1930s through 1950s. The largest part of this collection comes from MacCullough’s work on his textbook Elements of Strength of Materials and course material related to the topic of Strength of Materials. Other parts of the collection contain material of other Mechanical Engineering courses given by MacCullough at WPI, such as Dynamics, Applied Statics and Aeronautical Design. Another part of the collection contains lecture notes and problems gathered by MacCullough while he attended the University of Michigan to receive his Doctor of Science degree. Also, part of the collection contains reports (theses, dissertations, technical reports) by MacCullough largely focusing on materials and material science.

Biographical Note

Gleason Harvey MacCullough was born in Sawyerville, Quebec, Sept. 9, 1895. He graduated from WPI in 1918. He later received his Master of Science degree from WPI in 1931 and a Doctor of Science degree from the University of Michigan in 1932. Upon graduation MacCullough began teaching at WPI and was promoted from Instructor to Assistant Professor in 1924. He became a full Professor in 1930. In 1949, MacCullough became head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at WPI, a position which he held until retiring in June of 1956. He was a member of: the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Worcester Engineering Club, Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, and Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi honorary fraternities. In his field, MacCullough was a known expert in the area of strength of materials. He co-authored the book Elements of Strength of Materials with Prof. S. Timoshenko of Stanford University. This book was widely used in its time and received much praise. In 1955, along with two other professors, he taught Advanced Strength of Materials in the Graduate Evening School at WPI. This was the first evening school for graduate study at WPI. Professor MacCullough was never married, and lived in Worcester for many years where he was a member and Trustee of Grace Church in 1923 when Grace and Trinity Churches united to form Wesley Church. He was also a Trustee and usher of the church from 1936 to 1947. MacCullough was also an authority on stained glass windows. A special window was dedicated in his honor at Wesley Methodist Church. MacCullough died on Oct. 15, 1956 at the age of 61.
