Combined BS/MS Program

WPI’s Mathematical Sciences department affords outstanding undergraduates the opportunity to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree at once. This accelerated program is ideal for highly ambitious students who are eager to begin their careers.

Two variations of BS/MS programs are offered. First, operating under the general guidelines for BS/MS programs in a carefully constructed course outline, students can earn graduate credit during their senior year toward a master’s degree in Applied Mathematics or Applied Statistics. Interested students are encouraged to begin consulting with their academic advisors and a member of the Mathematical Sciences Department Graduate Committee early in their undergraduate career; they must apply for admission to this combined program during their junior year, so their accelerated program can be approved before the beginning of their senior year.

The other BS/MS path in the mathematical sciences department is a five-year program leading to a Professional Master of Science degree in either Industrial or Financial Mathematics. Admitted students may earn their bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a related field before moving on to either of the professional master’s programs. Students interested in this program need to indicate on the freshman admission application form; by selecting this option, applicants are automatically considered for the five-year program. In this track, students spend a year as a Peer Learning Assistant (PLA), and those who have successfully met their four-year goals may be awarded a partial teaching assistantship, which pays for the graduate year of the program.
