Basic & Advanced Courses
Basic Course
Comprising the first two years of the four-year ROTC program, the Basic Course serves to introduce cadets to the U.S. Army. Initial instruction, which includes MS I and MS II Military Science classes, is intended to create a working knowledge of ROTC and the Army. Specific goals include:
- Providing an overview of Army ROTC and the Army
- Developing a sense of responsibility toward academics and ROTC
- Instilling self-confidence and a sense of belonging
- Helping deserving cadets earn scholarship money
- Encouraging qualified cadets to contract into the Advanced Course
- Providing cadets with time-management and stress-coping skills.
Open to all students; carries no obligation for future military service.
Advanced Course
Taught during the third and fourth years, the more leadership-intensive Advanced Course is open to qualifying students and covers a wide range of topics. Classroom instruction and hands-on learning experiences help develop leaders and officers. Specific goals include preparing cadets to:
- Successfully complete the Leadership Development and Assessment Course
- Lead and train Basic Course cadets
- Make informed decisions
- Develop leadership and managerial skills
- Succeed at the Officer Basic Course (upon graduation)
Advanced Course Cadets receive a monthly stipend of $450 (MS III year) and $500 (MS IV year).
Open to qualified cadets who have completed the Basic Course (or received credit for it). Cadets incur a military commitment upon entrance into the Advanced Course.
