Global Scholars Program FAQs
Who is eligible for consideration for the Global Scholars Program?
First time applicants to WPI will be considered for the program. This includes both freshman and transfer applicants. Current WPI students are not eligible for consideration.
Is there a separate application or form to complete to be considered for the Global Scholars Program?
There is not a separate application, but we encourage candidates to submit WPI's Scholarship Supplement Form. All admitted students will be considered for the Global Scholars Program, as part of the WPI merit scholarship review. However, if applicants would like to strengthen their candidacy, they are encouraged to complete the supplement form as well as attach additional recommendations or information.
What is the deadline for the Scholarship Supplement Form?
There is no specific deadline for the supplement form. We recommend submitting it by the admissions application deadline for which you are applying. We will start reviewing admitted students for merit scholarships in December, and make decisions on a bi-weekly basis throughout the admissions application reading season.
Who makes the Global Scholars selections?
There is a scholarship committee that will review all admitted students for consideration for the program. Specific questions should be addressed to the Office of Admissions (firstname.lastname@example.org or 508-831-5286)
What specific programs can the scholarship be used for?
The $5,000 scholarship can be applied towards any off-campus program administered by the Interdisciplinary and Global Studies Division. This includes Humanities Projects, Interactive and Major Projects, and Exchange Programs.
How can I find out more about the locations and details?
Read more about specific locations on the Global Perspective Program website.
If I am selected as a Global Scholar does that guarantee selection for an off-campus project center?
The Global Perspective Program does employ an application and interview process for selection of students to each project center. Selection as a Global Scholar does not guarantee placement, however there are a variety of opportunities that the scholarship can be used for and students are encouraged to explore all the opportunities early in their program of study at WPI. Students on academic warning or probation are not eligible for projects at off-campus centers.
How competitive is selection for off-campus project centers?
The competition will vary year by year depending upon the number of applicants and the number of spots available. Not all students will receive their first choice location, however for students willing to consider a variety of centers the placement rate is typically over 85%.
When will I be notified if I am selected as a Global Scholar?
Scholars are selected on a rolling basis throughout the admissions application review season. Therefore, students will be notified on a rolling basis but as close to an admissions decision as possible (usually within two weeks of receiving a WPI admissions decision letter). All selections will typically be made by early April.
Will I be notified if I am not selected as a Global Scholar?
You will only receive notification if you are selected as a Global Scholar or receive another WPI merit scholarship.
