Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Mass. is continuing a major investment in the life sciences. In 2007, the university opened the WPI Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center (LSBC), which houses the life sciences-related graduate research programs of five academic departments and the WPI Bioengineering Institute (BEI). Since that time, WPI has recruited 12 new full-time faculty members in the life sciences and bioengineering, bringing to more than 30 the number of faculty working in interdisciplinary clusters within a strongly collaborative environment in the LSBC. As a result of this investment, graduate research and external research funding have increased considerably, with faculty winning major awards from the NIH, NSF, DARPA, and other agencies.

In 2008-09, WPI recruited five new full-time life science and bioengineering faculty members across five departments, including a new head for the Biomedical Engineering Department. In 2009-10, we are seeking to fill seven tenure-track positions at the junior and senior levels in five departments, including a new head for the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. The ideal candidates for these positions will have research interests and expertise that are complementary to our current research areas, and be committed to collaboration among multidisciplinary teams, and to securing external funding.
