WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester Polytechnic Institute's JazzGroup will host the International Associate of Jazz Educators' (IAJE) Jazz Choir and Jazz Combo Festival in Alden Memorial Hall, off Institute Road on the Worcester, Mass., campus, this Saturday, April 10, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The event will include 21 performance ensembles from high schools throughout Massachusetts, featuring some of the best high school jazz musicians in the state. Groups from Rivers School and New Bedford, Wellesley, Auburn, Nashoba Regional, Medfield, Norwood, Foxboro, Algonquin Regional, Lexington, Whitman-Hanson, North Middlesex and Leominster high schools will participate.
Nationally recognized professional jazz artists and educators will adjudicate each performance and record comments on cassette tapes. Awards for the best ensembles will be given in the gold, silver and bronze categories by IAJE, and certificates will recognize outstanding individual performers. In addition to the competition among the 21 choirs and combos, professional musicians will conduct clinics with the student musicians. The Four Freshmen will work with the singers and the Joyce DeCamillo Trio will help the instrumentalists. At the 5:30 closing ceremonies, there will be a performance by the Joyce DeCamillo Trio with special guest artist Herb Pomeroy.
The event promises to provide a variety of opportunities for young musicians. Following dinner, the choirs will attend an evening performance by the Four Freshmen at Point Breeze in Webster, Mass., and the instrumental combos will hear the Count Basie Orchestra at Mechanics Hall in Worcester.
The public is invited to attend the IAJE Festival and afternoon clinics. Tickets are $3 for general admission and $2 for students. For further information, contact WPI Director of Jazz Studies Richard Falco at 508-831-5794.
