Students Learn Real World Uses of Advanced Math at WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Center for
Industrial Mathematics and Statistics is hosting Research Experiences
for Undergraduates, a program funded by the National Science
Foundation. The students work in close collaboration with faculty and
industrial sponsors, including John Hancock, Morgan Construction
Co. and Veeder Root, to get a glimpse into how advanced mathematics is
used to solve complex problems. The students will take part in site
visits to United Technologies Research Center, BOSE and IBM. This
year's participants, who receive a $2,400 stipend and housing,
include:
- Xiomara Carrero of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The daughter of
Migdalia Martinez, she is a senior business
administration/statistics major at the University of Puerto
Rico.
- Paul Dostert of Guilford, Conn. He is the son of Rose Dostert
and a senior at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.,
where he is majoring in applied mathematics.
- Bryan Heilman of Clay Center, Ks. The son of Bob and Sally
Heilman, he will graduate from Kansas State University in
Manhattan, Ks., in December and is majoring in
mathematics.
- Brendan Hogan of Pensfield, N.Y. The son of Dennis and Christine
Hogan, he is a senior at St. Lawrence University in Canton,
N.Y., majoring in mathematics.
- Catherine Lee of Fountain Valley, Calif. The daughter of Ginfu
and Choying Lee, she is a junior at the University of California
at Berkeley where she is majoring in pure
mathematics.

Samuel Pruitt of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. The son of Norman
and Christina Pruitt, he is a senior mathematics major at Wayne
State University in Detroit, Mich.
- Christopher Shane of Salina, Ks. The son of Doris Shane, he is a
senior at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Ks., majoring in
mathematics.
- Lauren Wheeler of Medford, N.Y. The daughter of Lorraine and
Norman Wheeler, she is a senior at Elizabethtown College in
Elizabethtown, Pa., majoring in mathematics.
- Sarah E. Winne of Wethersfield, Conn., the daughter of Sue Winne
of Wethersfield and Mark Winne of Hartford, Conn. She is a
senior mathematics major with a Russian minor at Hamilton
College in Clinton, N.Y.
- Jake Woods of Durham, N.C. He is a junior at Duke University in
Durham, N.C., majoring in mathematics.
- Brian Ball of Naperville, Ill. A junior at WPI and
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerry Ball, he serves at the REU assistant. He is
majoring in physics.
WPI, founded in 1865, is renowned for its project-based curriculum. Under the WPI Plan, students integrate classroom studies with research projects conducted on campus and around the world.
