Students Named WPI Merit Scholars for the 2000-01 Academic Year

WORCESTER, Mass. - Each year Worcester Polytechnic Institute confers merit scholarships to the top applicants to the university. These awards honor students for their outstanding academic performance, leadership and community involvement. The following students are among those chosen to receive a merit scholarship from WPI.

  • Isaac Waldron of Meredith, N.H., a graduate of Inter Lakes Jr.-Sr. High School, has been awarded the $10,000 Presidential Scholarship.
  • Sara Jeffers of Bow, N.H., a graduate of Bow High School, has been awarded the $10,000 Presidential Scholarship.
  • Nicole Rennell of North Adams, Mass., a graduate of Drury High School, has been awarded the $5,000 Dean's Scholarship.
  • Stephanie Morin of Enfield, Conn., a graduate of East Longmeadow High School, has been awarded the $5,000 Medical Professions Scholarship.
  • Alexander Kinney of Hopkinton, Mass., a graduate of Hopkinton High School, has been awarded the $10,000 National Merit Finalist Scholarship and the $10,000 Presidential Scholarship.
  • Alison Scoble of Westwood, Mass., a graduate of Westwood High School, has been awarded the $5,000 Dean's Scholarship.
  • Jillian Garrity of Medford, Mass., a graduate of Medford High School, has been awarded the $5,000 Chemistry and Biochemistry Scholarship.
  • Amy Vieira of Stoughton, Mass., a graduate of Stoughton High School, has been awarded the $10,000 Presidential Scholarship.
  • Winfield Peterson of Worcester, Mass., a graduate of Massachusetts Academy of Mathematics and Science, has been awarded the $5,000 Dean's Scholarship.
  • Peter Cooper of Charlton, Mass., a graduate of Massachusetts Academy of Mathematics and Science, has been awarded the $5,000 Dean's Scholarship.
  • Gregory Case of Kittery, Maine, a graduate of Concord-Carlisle Regional High School, has been awarded the $5,000 Dean's Scholarship.

  • Jeffrey Gimondo of Latham, N.Y., a graduate of Shaker High School, has been awarded the $10,000 National Merit Finalist Scholarship and WPI's highest award, the Trustees Scholarship for full tuition.

Founded in 1865, WPI enrolls 2,700 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students in science, engineering, management, humanities and arts, and social sciences. Under the WPI Plan, undergraduates complete three projects focusing on their major course of study, the humanities, and the interactions among science, technology and society.
