What
Students from more than 60 high schools around the northeast will compete and test their strategic skills and technical expertise in BattleCry@WPI 6 -- one of the largest robotics competitions in New England. The event is hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and cosponsored by Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems.
BattleCry is a FIRST Robotics post-season competition, using the same field of play and rules as this year's FIRST game, Triple Play. The object of Triple Play is to attain a higher score for the three-team alliance of 130-pound robots than the opposing alliance during the two-minute-15-second matches. Points are scored by placing tetras (28-inch tall, three-dimensional tetrahedral space frames made of PVC piping) on or into goals, getting three goals in a row capped with tetras, and/or having all three robots on an alliance in their end zone at the end of the match.
Who
Forty-two student teams are scheduled to compete, with groups from Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Maine, and the following Massachusetts cities and towns:
Agawam, Boston, Bridgewater, Clinton, Fitchburg, Hopkinton, Lawrence, Marlborough, Northborough, Norwell, Shrewsbury, Springfield, Upton, West Springfield, Whitinsville and Worcester
The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition is an exciting, multinational contest that tasks teams of professionals and young people to solve an engineering design problem in an intense and competitive way. It challenges teams to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe. Teams build robots using a standard "kit of parts" and a common set of rules, and enter them in a series of competitions designed by Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers.
