Former Mass. House Speaker to Discuss Negotiating Tips at Entrepreneurship Organization’s Monthly Meeting

Thomas M. Finneran, president of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council, will be the keynote speaker at this month’s meeting of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Venture Forum, an organization devoted to developing technology-based entrepreneurship.
The former speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Finneran will speak on the subject of negotiations during his talk “All’s Fair in Love and War -- Negotiating Tips from a Pro.” He will share his thoughts and experience on how to approach, engage, interact, and work with individuals and organizations to find and foster the best transactions.
The second part of the meeting will be a case presentation by Total ReCord, Inc., a Worcester-based company, specializing in the development of unique regeneration products for the nervous system. Company founder and chief executive Jan-Eric Ahlfors, WPI ’02, MBA ’04, will discuss the mobilized adult stem cells (MASC) and SpheroGel™ products, which are showing promising results in early clinical trials in patients with chronic spinal cord injuries. He will also discuss the first phases of human clinical trials on its Regeneration Matrix™ (RMx™) product to promote the regeneration and repatterning of injured, lesioned, and degenerating CNS tissue.

Thomas M. Finneran accepted the position of president of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council in October 2004. Former House Speaker Finneran, a Democrat from Boston, represented the 12th Suffolk District, which includes sections of Dorchester, Mattapan, and Milton. A member of the House of Representatives since 1979, he served as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee from 1991 to 1996. Elected Speaker of the House in April 1996, he was re-elected in January of 1997, 1999, 2001 and, 2003. The speakers of 49 state legislatures elected him in 2002 as the president of the National Speakers Conference from all 50 states.
The WPI Venture Forum (www.wpiventureforum.org), as part of the Collaborative for Entrepreneurship & Innovation in the WPI Department of Management, promotes the entrepreneurial spirit and serves those who engage in technology-based entrepreneurial enterprises by providing advice, support, and education tailored to meet their needs.
