More than a thousand of the state's brightest young minds will be converging on the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) campus this Saturday for the Massachusetts State Finals of Destination ImagiNation (DI). DI is a national education competition that promotes creativity, problem solving and teamwork in K-12 students.

Students work together in teams of up to seven youngsters to compete in one of five competitive challenges. Each challenge has an educational focus incorporating a combination of skills such as technical design, current events, teamwork, improvisation techniques, and the arts. The 15- to 20-minute challenges have open-ended answers, empowering participants to create solutions that are imaginative, original, divergent and ingenious. While improvisation is key, the teams have put in months of preparation behind the scenes.

The teams in the state final advanced from 10 regional tournaments held earlier this year around the state. Saturday's top performers move on to the global finals scheduled for May 24-26 in Knoxville, Tenn.

Destination ImagiNation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization offering a global, youth-centered, creative problem-solving program.

The 150 student teams competing on Saturday represent approximately 70 cities and towns from all over the Commonwealth-from Dennis, west to Great Barrington, and from Dartmouth, north to North Andover. For information on schools participating and scheduling, visit the Massachusetts DI Web site at www.madikids.org.
