What
More than 300, 9- to 14-year-olds will be competing with their LEGO-robotic creations in RoboNautica 5, an official Massachusetts FIRST LEGOŽ League (FLL) tournament at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. After weeks of research, design, and practice, the youngsters will see whose robot prevails in this year's game, "Ocean Odyssey," which challenges teams to take action to ensure the health, diversity, and productivity of the world's oceans.
The LEGO robots will perform numerous "Ocean Odyssey" missions, including freeing a dolphin, placing an artificial reef, practicing responsible fishing, preventing pollution, locating a sunken ship, and repairing an underwater line. The participants will also research and present a project about mounting problems in the oceans, and provide possible solutions. The event is sponsored by Raytheon NCS.
FLL challenges tens of thousands of students worldwide to compete in teams and resolve problems faced by scientists and engineers conducting research in assistive technology. It introduces these young people to the fun and excitement of science and technology while building self-confidence, knowledge and life skills.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was created by Segway entrepreneur Dean Kamen (a member of the WPI Class of 1973) to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology.
