Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams Win Regular-Season NEWMAC Titles; Host Conference Tournaments This Week

Men's Coach Chris Bartley

It's a big week for basketball at WPI, and an even bigger weekend lies ahead. For the second time in three years, both the men’s and women’s teams captured the regular-season titles in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and won the right to host their respective conference tournaments in Harrington Auditorium. Both teams also earned No. 1 seeds.

For the men (20-4 overall; 11-1 NEWMAC), the regular-season title was their sixth straight. The Engineers earned a quarterfinal bye and will play fourth-seeded Springfield (which beat Clark 85-65 in the opening round) in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, in Harrington Auditorium.

Women's Coach Cherise Galasso

The women (20-5 overall; 12-1 NEWMAC ) defeated No. 8 seed Mount Holyoke 52-42 in the opening round of the NEWMAC tournament in Harrington on Wednesday and will take on Wheaton in the semifinals at noon on Saturday, also in Harrington.

Should the WPI teams prevail in the quarterfinals, they’ll play in championship games on Sunday: the women at noon and the men at 2:30 p.m.
