Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s (WPI) Information Technology Division is partnering with Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. to host Cyber Awareness Month in October to teach WPI students how to protect themselves from online predators, cyberbullying, and identity theft. During the Oct. 7 seminar – aimed at campus community members who are parents, grandparents, and other caretakers of children – District Attorney Early and his staff will present attendees information, software, and video examples of how people get themselves into trouble via the Internet. Ellen Miller, Early’s community outreach director, and Cornelius Spellman, WPI’s network security analyst and a former WPI police officer and senior investigator for the state Bureau of Special Investigations, will be the presenters, with introductions and remarks by Early and Thomas J. Lynch III, WPI’s CIO and vice president of information technology. Cyber Awareness Month is a national program sponsored by Microsoft and the National Cyber Security Alliance.
Cyber Awareness Month’s goal is to increase awareness about Internet safety issues. A leader in technology education, WPI has established a unique awareness program that focuses on all aspects of Internet and computer security. WPI is the only local university that assists students, faculty, and staff with a school-sponsored laptop theft program and is the only local university to offer an ID theft prevention program.
