Christopher Ritter Joins WPI as Vice President of Marketing and Communications

WPI has named Christopher Ritter vice president for marketing and communications. Ritter will lead a division of 20 professionals in the areas of marketing, public relations, publications, and the campus website. He will play a key role in shaping the public presentation of the university’s next capital campaign, and in the general promotion of the WPI’s qualities and distinguishing characteristics.

WORCESTER, Mass.– Jan. 20, 2009–   Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has named Christopher Ritter vice president for marketing and communications following a national search. Ritter will lead a division of 20 professionals in the areas of marketing, public relations, publications, and the campus website.  He will play a key role in shaping the public presentation of the university’s next capital campaign, and in the general promotion of the WPI’s qualities and distinguishing characteristics. 

Ritter brings to WPI more than 30 years of marketing and communications experience.  Most recently, he served as the chief marketing and communications officer for Binghamton University in New York.  While at Binghamton, Ritter led a team of 20 and is credited with planning and launching the first university-wide branding program, launching the university’s magazine, producing award-winning advertising, and leading a successful effort to advance Binghamton in the major college rankings.  Previously, Ritter served as the first director of university marketing at Clarkson University, serving on the president’s cabinet and developing an integrated strategic marketing plan. 

Prior to his decade-long career in higher education, Ritter spent 19 years at Eric Mower and Associates, Inc., a marketing and communications firm based in Syracuse, N.Y.  Ritter rose through the agency’s ranks, from copywriter to partner, and was involved with directing client teams and developing integrated marketing strategies for clients in technology, medical devices, health care, and higher education.  In the higher education area, Ritter worked with Wells College and Syracuse University, all in New York.  He received a B.A. in English literature from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.
