University Raised More Than $90,000 at 4th Annual Relay for Life

Worcester Polytechnic Institute's (WPI) Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) chapter recently received the 2010 American Cancer Society (ACS) Community Partner Award for Central Massachusetts for promoting the importance of cancer awareness and prevention through activities, events, and programs, including the annual Relay for Life fund-raiser. The ACS' signature fundraising activity, the relay is designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs. WPI held its 4th annual relay on April 17 and 18.

This year's event raised more than $90,000 (and counting), exceeding the $65,000 goal the ACS suggested for the event. Since the university's first relay in 2007 (the first among Worcester-area colleges and universities), WPI team members have raised more than $250,000 for the ACS, which is celebrating the 26th anniversary of the Relay for Life this year.

More than 755 WPI community members on 69 teams took part in this year's relay. Teams made up of students and faculty and staff members camped out overnight and took turns walking or running around the Harrington Auditorium track. Each team was asked to have a representative walking around the track at all times.
