Student Production to Feature WPI Men’s Glee Club, Alden Voices, Festival Orchestra
VOX, the music theatre production company at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), and the university's Department of Humanities and Arts music division will present Rodgers and Hammerstein's Tony award-winning Broadway musical theatre production, South Pacific. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Tales of the South Pacific, by James A. Michener, it is considered by most critics to be the greatest musical of the 20th century, and was initially made into a Broadway musical in 1949. The play takes place on a South Pacific island during World War II, where love blooms between a young nurse and a secretive Frenchman who has been courted for a dangerous military mission.
Kristy Chambrelli is returning to direct this, her fifth production at WPI. Her past theatrical direction at the university includes The Mikado, Sweeney Todd, Threepenny Opera, and Witchwife, which was written by WPI Choral Music Director John Delorey, who is also this production's music director. Thomas L. Collins III '01 is the producer. South Pacific will be fully staged and costumed, and will feature the WPI Men's Glee Club and Alden Voices under the direction of James Haupt. Professor Douglas Weeks is the conductor of the WPI Festival Orchestra. This is the fifth year that VOX has presented a production. More than 20 WPI students, alumni, and staff will take part.
