Alumni Return This Weekend for Reunion

Reunion 2005 starts tomorrow (Friday) with a golf tournament, a host of Alumni College sessions, the 50th Reunion reception for the Class of 1955 , the 50-Year Associates dinner, and performances in the evening by a comedian and a rock band.

On Saturday, alumni will enjoy more Alumni College sessions in the morning, a parade at noon followed by a luncheon and awards ceremony, a robotics demonstration on the Quad, and class banquets. A jazz brunch on Sunday rounds out the weekend.

The 11 Alumni College sessions include "Social Engineering: The Human Side of Hacking." "Cracking The Da Vinci Code," and "Is It Live or Is It Virtual?" (featuring Professor Fred Bianchi and the Virtual Orchestra). President Berkey will deliver the Alumni College keynote address on Friday at 9 a.m. in Olin 107. View the alumni schedule.

Berkey Speaks at Memorial Kick-Off Event

President Dennis Berkey delivered the keynote address at the kick-off for a campaign to raise $4 million to build a memorial in Institute Park to honor the memory of the six firefighters who died in the Worcester Cold Storage warehouse fire in December 1999. The event was held in the Campus Center. Other speakers included Worcester Fire Chief Gerard A. Dio, Denise Brotherton, whose husband, Paul, was among the six firefighters, Worcester Mayor Timothy P. Murray, and Worcester City Manager Michael V. O'Brien.

A model of the winning memorial design, selected by a blue-ribbon panel in a national competition, was on display. It features six encircled columns leaning toward each other and six converging shafts of light. Learn more about the campaign and the memorial park or make a donation

Project Lead the Way Is State Affiliate

Massachusetts middle and high school teachers looking to develop pre-engineering courses and curriculums have some new help. Project Lead the Way, a national program aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of engineers, has named WPI its Massachusetts affiliate to provide pre-engineering curriculum training modules for the first time in the Commonwealth, beginning this summer. More details on this prestigious designation are in this news release

Caisee Receives Thomas Jefferson Award

Margaret Caisee, administrative assistant in Fire Protection Engineering, recently received the Thomas Jefferson Award for her work as president of her local school parents association. The award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the children, families, and staff of the Worcester Public Schools.

Menides to Discuss Poetry on WTAG

Tune in to WTAG radio (580 AM) at 7:30 a.m on Sunday, June 12, to hear Laura Menides, professor of English, discuss the poetry of Worcester native Elizabeth Bishop. The 30-minute interview will be featured on "Worcester: Academically Speaking," a program sponsored by the Colleges of Worcester Consortium. Menides will appear again on June 19 to read from her own forthcoming poetry collection The Taming of the Girl-Child. Bishop, who died in 1976, was poetry consultant to the Library of Congress and received the Pulitzer Prize.

Darensbourg in the Spotlight Again

Once again this year, a play by Catherine Darensbourg '02 has been selected to be performed at the Samuel French Off-Off-Broadway Original Short Play Festival in New York City. Last year, Dreams Abridged, a shortened version of a play first performed in 1992 in New Voices, the annual festival of new plays written, produced, and performed by members of the WPI community, was mounted by a cast and crew of WPI students and alumni at the Chernuchin Theatre, American Theatre of Actors, at 314 West 54th Street.

A new WPI company will bring Passing, one of two Darensbourg plays featured in New Voices 23 this past spring, to the Chernuchin on the evening of July 22. Danielle LaBrecque '00 will direct. The play was nominated by Susan Vick, professor of drama/theatre and director of theatre at WPI.

The prestigious 12-night festival attracts submissions from some of the nation's best theatre companies. The top prize is publication of the new play by French, the world's largest theatrical publisher. This year, Darensbourg will have some competition from another WPI graduate, Patrick Brennan '89, whose play BITS, nominated by Playwright's Platform in Boston, will be performed on July 17 at 4:30 p.m. A mechanical engineering major now employed by Adobe Systems Inc., Brennan had his original plays produced in New Voices 2, 4, 5, and 18.

Additional information about WPI's participation in the Samuel French festival will be posted at the Masque Web site.

Pellegrino Named Assistant HR Director

Cynthia J. Pellegrino has been appointed assistant director of human resources. As human resources assistant over the past four years she was involved in the day-to-day operations of the office and special projects. During that time she earned an MBA from Nichols College (she holds a bachelor's degree from Worcester State College with a concentration in human resources management). In her new post, she will be involved in recruiting and employee relations, among other functions.
