Mass High Tech Covers WPI Alternative Energy Research
Work by Rajib Mallick in WPI's Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, in partnership with Novatech Inc., is aimed at turning sun-baked parking lots into solar Energy collectors.
Anyone who has walked barefoot across a parking lot on a hot summer day knows that blacktop is exceptionally good at soaking up the sun's warmth. Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), in partnership with Michael Hulen, president of Novotech Inc. in Acton, Mass, and a researcher at UMass Dartmouth, are developing technology to turn that heat-soaking property into an alternative energy source. The technology would also reduce the heat island effect caused by hot asphalt and lessen the damage that heat can do to pavement.
As reported in Mass High Tech, the team is seeking funding to test their ideas in a parking lot in Arizona. Read more.
