Transportation Safety

Activity

WPI departments of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, consistent with the long tradition of practical research at WPI have developed intellectual property in significant transportation application areas, e.g. automotive (crash energy absorption) and aviation (aerodynamics and control).

Patents

Johari/Durgin , U.S. Pat. No. 6,062,076, Ultrasonic method and system for wake turbulence useful at runways- Closed path ultrasonic propagation times from single and dual path configurations are utilized to detect vorticity with specific application to wake turbulence with the advantage of simple and less expensive implementation than approaches in more general usage that typically involve complicated laser optical designs.

Carney , U.S. Pat. No. 6,637,971 , Reusable high molecular weight/high density polyethylene guardrail - Rapid, economical replacement of damaged parts in a reusable vehicular accident guardrail design is accomplished in this invention with the important functional safety achievement of increased vehicle containment on the roadway (vs. vaulting of the guardrail as is common in the typical designs in use) and suppression of vehical flipover.

Ray/Plaxico , U.S. Pat. No. 6,962,245, Variable Force Energy Dissipater and Decelerator* - This invention utilizes high reliability collapsible cylinder and strap mechanism designs for energy dissipation in highway vehicle crash applications.
