Important Note: On NIH-funded awards, the amount provided to pre-doctoral Research Assistants for the total of stipend, health insurance, and tuition may not exceed the zero level NIH National Research Service Award (NRSA) postdoctoral stipend rate (plus fringe benefits) in effect at the time of the award. This stipend amount is currently $39,264. Thus, the maximum 12-month stipend for Graduate RAs on NIH funded awards is $25,066, or $2,089 per month. ($39,264, plus $10,012 fringe benefits, less tuition [18 X $1,281 = $23,058] and health insurance [$1,152]).

Graduate Tuition: $1,281 per credit hour (effective July 1, 2013). Graduate students are expected to be registered for a minimum of nine (9) credit hours per semester to be considered full-time.

Graduate Health Insurance: The annual rate is $1,152 per individual for the enrollment period August 2013 to August 2014.
Important Notes Regarding Graduate Student Appointments
Graduate Students Paid Monthy: Research Assistant (.6183) appointments should be paid within the above defined stipend ranges.
For reporting purposes going forward, we will differentiate academic year from summer graduate student hires. Thus, Payroll Authorizations or subsequent Change of Status may not extend beyond the following periods:
- Academic Year: August 15 through May 14
- Summer: May 15 through August 14

Distribution Bases
a. 59.2% of Modified Total Direct Cost (MTDC) for all budgets beginning July 1, 2011 or after - The MTDC base consists of all salaries and wages, fringe benefits, materials and supplies, services, travel, and subgrants and subcontracts up to the first $25,000 each (regardless of the period covered by the subgrant or subcontract). To calculate the MTDC base, Total Direct Costs (TDC) must be reduced by any budgeted amounts for equipment, capital expenditures, tuition remission, rental of off-site facilities, scholarships and fellowships, and the portion of each sub-award in excess of $25,000.
b. Salaries and wages of faculty and staff. Rate does not apply to student employees, research or teaching assistants.

Effective July 1, 2011 equipment is defined as nonexpendable, tangible personal property having a useful life of more than one year and an acquisition cost equal to or greater than $5,000.
The above rates are final predetermined rates – please use on all proposals through the effective period.
