Assignment of Web Addresses: Virtual Hosts
A virtual host allows a department to have its site physically located on the WPI Web server, but with a URL that makes it appear that the site is on a separate server. The advantage is that a site remains part of the WPI hierarchy while having a shorter, easier to remember address.
Because of the technical complexities involved in setting up and maintaining a virtual host, this solution is generally reserved for larger departments with a demonstrated marketing presence in other media. Large research groups and recognized student organizations may find this solution attractive, as well.
