Assignment of Web Addresses: Virtual Hosts

A virtual host allows a department to have its site physically located on the WPI Web server, but with a URL that makes it appear that the site is on a separate server. The advantage is that a site remains part of the WPI hierarchy while having a shorter, easier to remember address.

An example is the Continuing Education site, which is physically located at, but which has the published URL, Other examples are shown on the URL List

Because of the technical complexities involved in setting up and maintaining a virtual host, this solution is generally reserved for larger departments with a demonstrated marketing presence in other media. Large research groups and recognized student organizations may find this solution attractive, as well. To apply for a virtual host, please use the Virtual Host Request Form.
