Assignment of Web Addresses: Virtual Hosts

A virtual host allows a department to have its site physically located on the WPI Web server, but with a URL that makes it appear that the site is on a separate server. The advantage is that a site remains part of the WPI hierarchy while having a shorter, easier to remember address.

An example is the Continuing Education site, which is physically located at www.wpi.edu/Academics/CPE/, but which has the published URL, www.cpe.wpi.edu. Other examples are shown on the URL List

Because of the technical complexities involved in setting up and maintaining a virtual host, this solution is generally reserved for larger departments with a demonstrated marketing presence in other media. Large research groups and recognized student organizations may find this solution attractive, as well. To apply for a virtual host, please use the Virtual Host Request Form.
