About the President
Philip B. Ryan ’65
Philip Ryan ’65 is the interim president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, assuming the role in June of 2013. He has been a member of the WPI Board of Trustees since 1999 and had been elected the 21st chairman of the Board earlier this year.
Prior to assuming the presidency of WPI, Ryan served as a senior executive and corporate advisor, mentoring CEOs, executive teams, and corporate boards in team development, corporate strategy, capital restructuring, and divestiture strategies that optimized shareholder value.
Throughout his career, Ryan has led organizations through periods of significant transformation and profitable growth. He has extensive experience serving on public, private, and nonprofit boards, and served for many years as CEO of Merchants Automotive Group, a privately owned diversified transportation company with activities in corporate fleet leasing, fleet management, and real estate investments.
From 1990 to 1997, Ryan was president and CEO of Elliot Health System, which managed a full array of inpatient and outpatient health services. Prior to that, he was an owner and officer of The Bigelow Company, a management consulting and private investment banking firm he co-founded in 1970.
Ryan received a bachelor of science in civil engineering from WPI in 1965. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and he has lectured and taught courses at the University of New Hampshire, New Hampshire College, and WPI. He and his wife, Judith, reside in Bedford, N.H.
