A Word of Thanks

As we prepare to send the Class of 2008 off to its important future, I want to thank all members of the WPI Community for another very productive and truly wonderful academic year. Students contributed mightily to the quality of our academic, artistic, and creative work as well as providing exemplary leadership, citizenship, and community service. Faculty continued to develop important new programs, advanced outstanding scholarship and research, and sustained their exceptional commitment to excellence in teaching and to the development of our students in so many important ways. Our staff provided a fully professional and truly essential level of service and support consistently and with great good cheer.

Our capital campaign has experienced a very successful launch, our new facilities are working well, our campus and our programs continue to evolve importantly, and our profile in the region and the nation is rising substantially. We will welcome an entering class considerably larger than what we had planned for in the fall, due to a significant increase in the "yield" on offers of admission, another sign of WPI's growing stature.

As good as our fortunes are, we remain mindful of the world's heartaches. We extend our sympathy and support to our Chinese students, faculty, and staff for the huge losses from the recent earthquake. The continuing war in Iraq and the other causes of deep concern in the Middle East weigh heavily on us. The stress and uncertainty of the unsettled economy has colored life dramatically for many this past year. We are indeed fortunate in the quality of life at WPI.

For all that each member of the WPI community has contributed this year I extend personal appreciation from Cathy and me. Whether the sun shines brightly or not on Saturday, Commencement 2008 will surely be a glorious event!

Sincerely yours,
Dennis D. Berkey
