Information for Upperclassmen

Basic Steps of the Housing Selection Process for Upperclassmen

Step 1: Fill Out Housing Survey on Bannerweb

On January 18th you will receive an email from Residential Services that will give you directions for participating in the Housing Lottery Process.  To participate in the housing lottery you need to follow the link to the  HOUSING SELECTION SURVEY and click Yes.  By completing this survey, you are authorizing a $100 charge to your student account.  This $100 deposit is refundable if you do not select housing, and will be credited to your bill next year if you do select housing.

You can also complete the housing survey by following these steps.

  1. Login to WPI's Web Information System
  2. Enter your user ID number and your Personal Identification Number (PIN).  If you have forgotten your PIN, there is a link on this page to retrieve or reset it.
  3. Click on "Student Services & Financial Aid."
  4. Answer a Survey- click on the Housing Lottery Survey
  5. Participate in Housing Lottery Fall 2011

Step 2: Attend an Information Session/Take a Tour

Information Sessions

During the information sessions the staff of the Office of Residential Services presents an overview of the housing selection process. Sessions are available this year on the following days in the Campus Center Hagglund Room:

  • January 26th at 4:00pm
  • January 30th at 12:00pm
  • February 2nd at 5:00pm

Take a Tour

There are many different choices of residence halls available at WPI. We encourage you to tour as many buildings as possible so that you can make an informed choice regarding where you want to live. Tours are available of East Hall, Ellsworth/Fuller Apartments, Founders Hall, and Salisbury Estates.  To attend a tour meet outside of Ellsworth 16 (Ellsworth/Fuller) or the Founders Lobby (Founders, East, Salisbury) on the following dates and times for tours:

  • February 6th at 7:00pm
  • February 7th at 8:00pm
  • February 9th at 8:00pm

Step 3: Receive Your Lottery Number

Each student who completed the survey is randomly assigned a lottery number. This number determines placement in the housing selection process. Lottery numbers will be available to students beginning in mid-February in the WPI Web Information System (Banner). Once in Banner, click on the Student Services and Financial Aid section and follow to the housing section.

Step 4: Attend Housing Selection Nights

Housing selection generally takes place on February 21st (East Hall) and February 22nd (All other upperclass locations) in the Campus Center Odeum.

Housing selection takes place until all available apartments and rooms have been selected or all lottery numbers have been exhausted, whichever comes first. All students must be present at housing selection night in order to make a room selection unless a proxy has been arranged. Download the Housing Selection Proxy Form.

Apartment and residence hall floor plans will be displayed and kept updated throughout the night of selection so students may be kept informed regarding the rooms that remain available.

What to Bring to Housing Selection Night

  • Lottery Number
  • Student ID
  • Proxy note (if you are someone's proxy)

Work Together for the Best Chance of Living with a Roommate of Your Choice

Students will be able to work together in groups to choose housing. Once lottery numbers are distributed, you and your friends will know which of you has the best lottery number of the group. If you are seeking to sign up for a suite then all of you would come forward when the lowest number in the group is called at housing selection. Everyone in the group must have a lottery number but you will be signing into the suite under the lowest number.

Roommate Matching Opportunity

The Office of Residential Services will have a binder for those interested to post a "roommate wanted" advertisement. If you need a 7th person for a 7-person apartment or a 4th for a 4-person suite, etc. you can place an "ad" in our roommate finder binder. Students interested in finding persons to connect with before housing selection can utilize these listings in order to contact interested persons. The binder will be available beginning in late January.

Students who desire a double in a residence hall other than Founders Hall but have no roommate may be assigned to an available room. Another student requesting a space in that building may be assigned as this person's new roommate. If any spaces remain in rooms after Housing Selection Night, they will be filled with another student who is on the "wait list" or a freshman.

Step 5:  Sign Your Housing Contract

Housing contracts will be available for students to sign on housing selection night if they choose housing at that time.

Housing Contracts will be collected when the student has selected a room. Contracts must be completed or the student will forfeit his/her assignment. Once signed, housing contracts are binding for the academic year. Read a copy of the housing contract.
