Philip B. Ryan
Chairman, WPI Board of Trustees
Philip B. Ryan ’65 is the 21st chairman of the Board of Trustees of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, succeeding Steven E. Rubin ’74. A seasoned senior executive and corporate advisor, Ryan has served as a trustee since 1999.
Ryan currently serves as a corporate advisor, working closely with CEOs, their leadership teams, and corporate boards in such areas as executive leadership and team development, formulating and implementing corporate strategy and capital restructuring.
Previously, as CEO and president, Ryan led a number of organizations through periods of significant transformation and profitable growth, and he has extensive experience serving on public, private, and nonprofit boards. In December 2011, he retired from his position as CEO of Merchants Automotive Group, a privately owned diversified transportation company with activities in corporate fleet leasing, fleet management and real estate investments. Prior to joining Merchants in 2003, he founded a strategy consulting and private investment banking company focused on enhancing the value of entrepreneurial firms. From 1990 to 1997, Ryan was President and CEO of Elliot Health System, which managed a full array of inpatient and outpatient health services. Prior to 1990, he was an owner and officer of The Bigelow Company, a management consulting and private investment banking firm that he co-founded in 1970.
Ryan received a bachelor of science in civil engineering from WPI in 1965 and went on to earn an MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1970. He resides in Bedford, N.H.
