Baccalaureate and Commencement 2009
The Class of 2009 sought wonderful weather for their Commencement Day Ceremony, and because of their hard work and initiative, they were richly rewarded with sunny skies, a light breeze, and the awarding of their personal diplomas. A total of 955 graduates were awarded their degrees on Saturday, May 16 in a ceremony held on the Quadrangle, in the center of campus. For the full story of Baccalaureate and Commencement Weekend activities, please visit the Commencement website.
Creating Robots to Improve the Quality of Life
by Richard Beach
The first Robotics Innovations Competition and Conference (RICC) will be held November 7-8, 2009, at WPI, challenging university-level students to engineer innovative robotic solutions to real-world problems. The theme of this year's competition focuses on the development of creative solutions to improve the quality of life. The competition is open to design teams formed by students enrolled at the undergraduate or graduate level. The emphasis will be on innovation, technical approach, and professionalism.
We have had more than 33,000 site visits from all over the world in just three months, and participants from as far away as Mexico City, making the RICC truly an international event. If anyone knows of a company that might be interested in sponsoring this RICC event, please contact Richard D. Beach at email@example.com. Detailed competition and conference information can be found on the RICC website.
The RICC is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (Award No. CNS-0722218).
WPI Parents Fund
Thanks to the support of parents, alumni, and friends, WPI can provide an outstanding educational experience for all students. Through the WPI Parents Fund, families can give to the highest priorities of the university; current-use financial aid, student life, and faculty teaching and research.
Already this year, more than 540 parents have contributed approximately $72,000. With the end of the fiscal year about a month away, we are hoping to capitalize on the progress we've already made and finish the year with a strong final push. Your support is important to us now, and goes to work immediately, helping to benefit our WPI students today. Please consider joining your fellow WPI parents who have supported WPI already this year by visiting WPI's secure server on the Giving to WPI website.
We are also pleased to announce the creation of the WPI Parents Council and we thank our charter members: Mr. and Mrs. Richard Decker, Jr. P '12, and Mr. and Mrs. Michael Scaviola P '04. For more information about the WPI Parents Council, please contact Patrick Maloney at firstname.lastname@example.org.
