Energy & Sustainability

WPI's broad-based research in energy and sustainability includes work in several engineering and science departments. Focus areas include energy generation and alternative energy (fuel cells, hydrogen production from natural gas and coal gas, aerial and undersea electric generation from kites); energy storage (grid energy storage with flow batteries); materials recycling and recovery; water treatment; bio-inspired and sustainable building materials; and sustainable development.

Recharging Grid Energy Storage

Yan Wang has found a way to greatly boost the solar and wind energy density of flow batteries by replacing their electrolytes with thick suspensions containing metal particles.
