Creating Links

It is possible to connect to a different web page, provide a download link to a file, or link to an email address.

Follow the steps below to insert a link to a:

Step 1

To begin, select the text to be linked then click the 'Insert Hyperlink' button on the text editor toolbar. To edit an existing link, select the text to be linked then select 'Edit Hyperlink' from the Insert menu.

CMS Links

It is recommended to locate the page identification number (Page ID) of the page to be linked to. To find this information, navigate to the page, then record the Page ID number for later steps.

Add the Name of the link in an alphabetical way first , then click the 'Insert Hyperlink' button. After that,  click the 'Page' tab then click the button labeled 'Select Page.'

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A search dialog box appears. The two most common methods of searching for pages are by Headline or Page ID. To search by:

  • Headline: enter the title of the page in the Headline field
  • Page ID: select the Page ID option from the dropdown box, click the plus button, then enter the page ID number

Press Enter on the keyboard or click the Start button to begin the search.

A results list appears. A headline search may result in a large number of pages being found. To determine which page is correct examine the Last Editor, Alteration Date, Page ID and Page Preview information. Once the correct page is located, click the headline link.

The page information displays. Enter a description then click the 'Insert' button.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

External Webpage Links

External webpage links are used for any website that is not part of the WPI domain (i.e. www.wpi.edu) or sites not converted as of yet. Before creating an external link within the WPI domain, verify the page is not currently in CMS by visiting the Conversion Progress page.

  1. Click the 'Insert Hyperlink' button from the text editor toolbar
  2. Select the Internet tab
  3. Type or paste the URL of the site into the top text box
  4. After adding the URL enter a description  (i.e. the name of the page being linked)
  5. Click the 'Insert' button

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

E-mail (mailto) Links

One commonly used link type is an e-mail link.  When this link is clicked the users e-mail program launches and begins composing a message to that email address.

  1. Click the 'Insert Hyperlink' button from the text editor toolbar
  2. Select the E-mail address tab
  3. Type or paste the email address into the top text box and the description
  4. Click the 'Insert' button

It is recommended department e-mail aliases be used instead of personal e-mail addresses where appropriate.
