Note

Digital audio recorders can be borrowed from the ATC. Visit the ATC in Fuller Labs, call x5220, or send e-mail to atc@wpi.edu for information on borrowing a digital audio recorder.

When you borrow a Digital Audio Recorder from the ATC, you will receive a numbered kit provided in a small case. The Digital Audio Recorder kit should include:

Setting Up the Digital Audio Recorder for Classroom Use

Note

Refer to Image 1 (above) for hardware reference numbers in the instructions below.

  1. Plug the microphone (2) into the Digital Audio Recorder (1). The microphone jack is located on the left side of the Recorder.
  2. Insert one Sony Memory Stick (3) into the slot in the bottom of the Digital Audio Recorder. To do this, slide the "Eject" button towards the bottom of the Recorder so that the door opens and you can slide the memory stick in. The Recorder will read the Memory Stick and it will briefly flash on the screen and then disappear.
  3. Attach the microphone below the collar of your shirt or near the knot of your tie.

    Image 2: Proper microphone placement

Tip

The microphone should not be covered up by a tie or jacket as it will muffle the recording. The microphone should be clipped about 4-5 inches from your mouth so that heavy breathing is not recorded. Refer to Image 2 above.

  1. On the back side of the Recorder, slide the "Hold" button to power on the Recorder.

Note

The "Hold" button is similar to a standard "Power" button. Power on and off the Digital Audio Recorder by sliding the "Hold" button to the left or right.

  1. On the Recorder screen, the default "Folder01" appears. Below "Folder01" are numbers indicating the number of files and the file number you are currently on. If you have just borrowed a Digital Audio Recorder and these numbers show anything but "000/000" (zero of zero files), you will need to format the memory stick by deleting the audio files already on it.
  2. When you are finished with the Recorder for an extended period of time, slide the "Hold" button again to power off the Digital Audio Recorder. It will flash briefly and then the screen will go blank.

Recording Audio

  1. When you are ready to record audio, press the "Rec/Rec Pause" button on the side of the Recorder.
  2. You can press the ""Rec/Rec Pause" button if you need to pause at all during your lecture. To resume, simply press the "Rec/Rec Pause" again.
  3. When you are ready to stop recording, press the "Stop" button. The file will save. You can record multiple audio clips on the memory stick.
  4. When you are finished with the Recorder for an extended period of time, slide the "Hold" button again to power off the Digital Audio Recorder. It will flash briefly and then the screen will go blank.

Playing Back Audio

  1. If you want to review your audio clips, use the jog lever to scroll through and select the audio file you want to play back.

The jog lever is located on the right side of the ICD-MS515 Recorder

  2. Press the jog lever switch in to play back your file. If you would like to use a personal headset (the ATC does not provide these with the Digital Audio Recorder kits, but you can reserve a headset separately) so that the audio is not played back through the speakers, you can use the jack at the top of the Recorder.
  3. Use the jog lever button to fast forward or rewind your audio.
  4. When you are finished with the Recorder for an extended period of time, slide the "Hold" button again to power off the Digital Audio Recorder. It will flash briefly and then the screen will go blank.

Deleting Audio Files

Caution

This process will erase all files and folders stored on your memory stick!

  1. Press the jog lever button back towards "Menu."
  2. The Recorder menu will appear on the screen. Use the jog lever and scroll to FORMAT.
  3. Press the jog lever in and confirm the format by selecting YES and OK (press the jog lever in to select both these options).
  4. You will return to the main menu. Press the jog lever back towards "Menu" again to exit.
