Project GO-WPI

Project GO (Global Officers) is a nationwide program sponsored by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO) and is open to all branches of ROTC. By providing funding to ROTC students for study of critical languages, the program aims to improve the language skills, regional expertise, and intercultural communication skills of future military officers.

Project GO offers ROTC students:

  • Language scholarships
  • Fully-funded study abroad programs
  • Summer and academic year programs at major universities nationwide
  • No additional service commitment
  • Academic credit
  • Eligibility for language incentive pay

Project GO-WPI is a U.S. Department of Defense initiative awarded to WPI’s Department of Humanities and Arts. During summer 2018, Worcester Polytechnic Institute will offer an eight-week Mandarin language immersion program in Beijing, China. Through Project GO at WPI, students will gain critical foreign language proficiency and cultural skills necessary for their careers in a global environment. Students can fulfill language requirements without interrupting ROTC schedules.

Project Go –WPI provides an 8-week intensive beginner Chinese language immersion program from June 2 to July 28, 2018. This program is for students with no prior knowledge of the Chinese language. Based on the communicative-functional approach to language learning, this program emphasizes speaking, listening, reading and writing. The course meets four hours a day, five days a week, enabling students to cover the equivalent of one year of Chinese language study (1 unit or 3 course equivalent at WPI).  Each student will have a language partner to assist with course work and cultural adjustment. In addition to developing linguistic proficiency, the program will provide students with a series of lectures, workshops and excursions in and around Beijing for cultural exposure. A midterm trip to Xi’an is scheduled to expose students to one of the oldest cities in China.

The program will provide fully funded scholarships for successful ROTC applicants to study Mandarin Chinese. Scholarships are open to ROTC students from any US university. The scholarships will cover:
