I am interested in the COMPUTER SCIENCE and ENGINEERING perspective of learning technologies. I have created artificially intelligent tutoring software that models students knowledge and affective states, from behaviors and physiological sensors, as students use the software; I have used data mining and statistical methods to empirically model student mental/affective states from past student data. Implemented web-based architectures (Java Servlets, Clients, MySQL databases, communication protocols) for cyber-larning technologies, and more recently have embarked in creating clothes and wearable learning tools for children to learn mathematics while playing outdoors.
I am interested in the EDUCATION perspective of learning sciences and technologies. I have has researched and created multimedia learning software for mathematics, and worked closely with thousands of K-12 students and teachers, deployed software in public schools, while trying understand how students best learn, develop abstract thought, and perceive mathematics with interactive math learning software, and how to support teachers in their teaching process via digital assessment tools.
I am interested in the PSYCHOLOGY perspective of learning sciences and technologies. I have studied developmental gender differences in the use and benefit of math tutoring software, cognitive psychology issues in relation to the best representations to use while teaching mathematics, and memory retrieval studies where the training of speed of retrieval of basic math facts help students increase working memory capacity and succeed in complex math tasks.
