Leading the World to Safety

A Note from WPI’s FPE Department Chair

As the world becomes more crowded and complex, the risk of death and destruction from fire continues to rise. WPI’s Fire Protection Engineering (FPE) Department is leading the world to safety by finding more tools and techniques for avoiding fiery disasters before they occur. By educating the brightest minds of the next generation. By invigorating the larger FPE community with new, cutting-edge research.

For more than 30 years, we have been building a department in which multidisciplinary innovation, excellence, and collaboration is our calling card. It is only through this collaborative lens that we can begin to tackle the FPE problems of the 21st century, be they industrial, technological, or concerning sustainability. And we fully anticipate that in the coming years our students, our faculty, and our research partners will continue to build on this remarkable heritage.

Since its inception in 1979, WPI has graduated more than 400 students in FPE. These exceptionally well-educated graduates go on to careers that save lives and protect property every day around the world. FPE is a superb example of how WPI prepares students to tackle not only the interesting challenges of engineering and science, but also some of the most urgent.

Arriving at WPI to study fire protection engineering is more than entering a classroom. It's accessing the nexus of practice and policy, joining an ever-evolving community of practitioners, researchers, and students committed to leading the future of fire safety.

We hope you'll join us in this most pressing call.

Warm regards,
Kathy Notarianni
