Request an Item

Library users can make several types of requests in the library catalog. Anyone can request items that are checked out to other users, and ask to retrieve print project reports and items from Founders storage. Faculty can request items for course reserve. Users can also make requests in-person at the Information Desk.

To request an item online, follow these steps:

  1. Find the item in the catalog
  2. Click "Make a request" on the right-hand side of the page
  3. Click "WPI Faculty, Students, and Staff"
  4. Type your WPI username and password
  5. Click the type of request that you want (hold, recall, etc.)

What is a hold?

A hold is a request to get an item after the original user is finished with it. A hold prevents the original user from renewing the item and standard overdue fines apply.

What is a recall?

A recall is similar to a hold request in that it prevents the original user from renewing the item but it is different in that the user must return the item by the original due date or be held liable for recall fines of $15/day. If an item is recalled, an email will be sent to the original user informing him/her of the recall.

What is Founders storage?

Founders storage is a library storage room located in Founders Hall. It contains primarily older, infrequently used, journals and books that cannot be shelved in Gordon Library due to space limitations.

What is a faculty reserve request?

A faculty reserve request is a type of hold request that faculty can use to request books and materials from the catalog that will be placed on placed on library reserve for their courses.

I tried to place a hold/recall on an item, but it didn’t work. What happened?

Hold requests cannot be placed on items that are not checked out. If an item says "available" in the catalog, it cannot be held. It should be on the shelf. Holds are not available if a user is blocked due to accumulated fines and fees. Stop by the Information Desk to resolve any outstanding obligations.
