More than an Academic Experience

During this virtual program, participants will spend either their morning or afternoon diving into a STEM discipline of their choosing with current WPI faculty. During Launch, students will also be able to take advantage of some fun additional activities that will complement their virtual experience. See below regarding information on our technical webinars, orientation and virtual activities.

On Sunday, August 8, 2021, Launch II Virtual will be offering a student and family orientation to share available resources, get set up on the online learning platforms (Zoom and Canvas), and have live conversations with the WPI Community.

Our orientation schedule will include:

  • Welcome to WPI & Launch
  • Technology Overview & Online Learning
  • Live Q & A with WPI staff
  • View the full orientation schedule will be available soon.

Participants live in WPI residence halls and are assigned to single, double, or triple occupancy rooms on a floor with other participants with the same gender identity. Each participant will have a bed, desk, closet, dresser, and a linens package (fitted sheet, flat sheet, blanket, pillow, pillowcase, towel and wash cloth). Residence halls have wireless internet access, study lounges, and laundry facilities, but have no air conditioning.  Students will be issued a room key and a secure ID card, and are expected to keep these items on their person at all times.

We recommend you plan to bring the following:

  • Alarm Clock
  • Fan
  • Hangers
  • Small basket for toiletries
  • Shower shoes/flip flops
  • Long pants and close-toed shoes if you are participating in a lab-based program
  • If you are bringing prescription medications, they must be in their original packaging with the prescribing physician's name. All medications must be reviewed by the nurse upon program check-in.
  • All meals are included, but may want to bring cash for Dunkin Donuts, Campus Store, or the laundry facilities
  • No refrigerators are provided in the rooms, but you may bring non-perishable snacks

Participants eat in one of our WPI dining facilities for all meals. There is a wide variety of food selections daily, including vegetarian, kosher, and gluten free options in addition to a salad bar, hot entrees, sandwiches, and desserts. The dining staff is happy to accommodate any special needs or restrictions with advance notice.

A summer health care center is open to all of our summer programs participants.  During residential programming, a dedicated 24-hour nursing staff is available on campus. If you are bringing prescription medications, they must be in their original packaging with the prescribing physician's name.  With very few exceptions (e.g. epi-pens and inhalers), students are not allowed to have any prescription medications in their rooms. Our nursing staff will be available at check-in to meet with you and accept the medication, which will be dispensed by our health staff over the course of the program.

Our programs are planned and managed by several full-time professional staff who work year round to support all pre-collegiate programs.  During the summer, the entire WPI community is involved in supporting our programs, including our undergraduate students who serve as Residential Program Assistants. They are selected for their experience with children, leadership skills, enthusiasm, maturity, willingness to help others.  All participants are supervised the entire time that they are on campus for our programs. All instructors and staff undergo criminal and sexual offender background checks. Participants are not allowed ot leave campus unsupervised at any time. They must be in their residence hall by 10 pm and are required to check in with staff at that time.

Our Campus Police staff work in concert with the rest of the community to keep our campus safe. All summer participants are required to wear lanyards with ID badges for identification purposes and are not allowed to be unsupervised at any time.
