Camp Reach relies heavily on the incorporation of mentors and role models to enrich our campers' experience.  We are excited to offer opportunities for high school women and middle school teachers to work alongside our campers as they discover engineering.

We are seeking middle school teachers and high school students for our upcoming camp. The applications will be available in February.  The TA application will be due by April 15, 2019, and the MST application will be due by April 15, 2019.

Camp Reach

Camp Reach is an award-winning engineering outreach program for rising 7th grade girls, to generate interest in engineering and technology and to enhance self-confidence and motivation toward education.  Thirty girls from Massachusetts participate annually in the two-week program. This camp will include hands-on experiential workshops, a design project for a community organization, field trips, recreational activities, and follow-up programs during the academic year.

My first experience at Camp Reach was so positive that I encouraged two of my peers to join me the second time. This chance to reach out to girls who have tapped into a love of math and science was an exciting and unexpected opportunity.

Middle School Teachers

We are seeking Middle School Teachers (MSTs) whose subjects include math, science, or technology to be part of the Camp Reach staff. Duties are from 8:30am to 5pm, but are invited to participate in evening or weekend activities. Training is provided to gain exposure to engineering fields, as well as to the engineering design process and ways that it can be incorporated into middle school curricula. During the Camp Reach program, teachers are each assigned to assist one team of ten campers to complete their community-oriented design project. They will help the girls meet specific goals and facilitate the sharing of ideas. Teachers will also mentor/collaborate with high school Teaching Assistants (former Camp Reach participants) to enhance the experience for the campers. The projects are not particularly technical, so extensive computer or technological knowledge is not required. Teachers will bring their adult perspective and the experience of knowing how to work with girls this age. They also participate in discovery workshop activities (to observe or facilitate/co-teach) and provide evaluation of the program.  The total expected time commitment, including preparation and implementation, is about 120 hours. 

This position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, good judgment, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.  A successful teacher will also exhibit a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and an interest to work with students and staff from diverse backgrounds.  

A stipend of $2,000 is provided upon completion of the Camp Reach, along with lunch each day and a minimum of 90 Professional Development Points.

Program Dates: July 21 at 12pm - August 2, 2019 at 7pm. (Participation during the interim weekend of July 27-28 is optional.)

Staff Training: July 18-19, 2019 from 8am-5pm. (Participation on these dates is mandatory due to state regulations.) 

Application Deadline: April 15, 2019 (Final decisions will be sent by mid-May.)

Eligibility: Middle School (grades 6-8) math, science, or technology teachers in Massachusetts. Open to any gender.

High School Students

We are seeking responsible, mature young women to serve on the camp staff as counselors, or what we call Teaching Assistants (TAs). TAs are supervised during the day by program directors, middle school teachers, and the Academic Coordinator. During the evening they are supervised by carefully screened, trained female college student Residential Program Assistants and by an after-hours Program Coordinator. In some circumstances and of their own choosing, TAs may commute from home and be on campus only from 9:00am - 5:00pm.

Camp Reach is designed to provide a spectrum of role models all the way from high school students to college students, practicing engineers, middle school math and science teachers, and WPI faculty. We are looking for six to nine high school students to serve as TAs who will work with teams of campers during their two weeks at WPI. The campers typically respond well to TAs because of their proximity in age and experiences. The responsibilities of the TAs are primarily from 8:00am-5:00pm and include assisting with the workshops, coaching the girls about their work on the design projects, being "big sisters" in the residence halls, and participating in evening recreational activities. Overall, the most important responsibility of TAs is to be a good role model at all times.

Successful applicants, through their application, recommendation forms, and interview, will show the capacity to be an excellent role model and reliable staff member: responsibility, maturity, intellectual curiosity, leadership, communication skills, interpersonal skills, achievement in mathematics and science, and an interest or curiosity about engineering. Because of budget constraints, we are looking for volunteers for the TA position, with room and board provided. With parental permission, all TAs will be treated to two “TA Nights Out” during the program.

This experience is a tremendous growth and learning opportunity for TAs. They benefit by enhancing their interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills and by learning more about engineering, math and science. In addition, they work with WPI faculty and staff in a college environment with excellent laboratory facilities. It's a lot of fun too!

Program Dates: July 21 at 12pm - August 2, 2019 at 7pm. (TAs are expected to participate for the entire two-week program.)

3.   Finalists will be asked to participate in a group-format interview on Tuesday, April 23 or Wednesday, April 24, 2019 from 5-6:00 pm.
