As the need for professionals with systems modeling expertise grows, WPI’s MS in Systems Modeling program offers a foundation in system dynamics and in the underpinnings of how mathematical modeling is used in other disciplines.

The MS program strengthens your understanding of and experience with the formal and computer simulation-based approaches to the construction and analysis of mathematical models. You'll explore these models in the context of economic, social, and physical systems. Students learn how to apply modeling concepts across disciplines so they are able to use the skills and apply them to real-world situations and scenarios.


This interdisciplinary degree is granted by the Social Science & Policy Studies Department and the Mathematical Sciences Department and includes courses in mathematics and system dynamics. Course work builds on methodologies such as feedback control theory, optimization, numerical methods, and computer simulation, but you'll also incorporate various electives in the engineering, science, and management departments.

A Diverse Curriculum Offers Many Avenues to Explore

WPI’s collaborative community allows you to explore your interests in specific systems modeling approaches while sharing ideas and resources with our expert faculty and diverse graduate student body.

Students combine courses in system dynamics with mathematical modeling courses and a designated application area. Application areas can include choices such as industrial engineering, management, infrastructure planning, telecommunications planning, or power systems and will often include credits earned as a supervised project.
