Zipcar

WPI and Zipcar, the world's largest provider of cars on demand by the hour or day, announced a joint partnership to provide Zipcars on campus to university faculty, staff, and students as an environmentally friendly alternative to the costs and hassles of keeping a car on campus. The partnership continues WPI's commitment to invest in sustainable solutions.

Two self-service Zipcars, Honda Civic Hybrids, will be available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The cars will be available to all staff and students aged 18+, with gas, maintenance, insurance and reserved parking included in low hourly and daily rates.

How does Zipcar work?

Zipcar is an internet-based service that allows you to rent a car for an hour or two or for an entire day. It is a turnkey program that includes everything - vehicles parked right on campus, online reservation system, gasoline, insurance coverage, and billing.

Faculty, staff, and students will be able to join Zipcar for $35 and will gain access to Zipcars for $7 per hour or $60 per day.

It's as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4.

  1. Join
Apply online today. It only takes a few minutes. Once you're approved, you get your very own Zipcard.
  2. Reserve
Reserve one of our Honda Civic Hybrids - for a couple hours or the entire day. Reserve your car online or by phone.
  3. Unlock
Walk to the car, which will be located on the Quad, then just hold your Zipcard to the windshield. The doors will unlock, and it's all yours.
  4. Drive
Drive away... and return to the same reserved parking spot at the end of your reservation. It's that simple. And remember, gas and insurance are included too.

WPI's Commitment to Sustainable Solutions

Our partnership with Zipcar not only provides much needed transportation to students, faculty, and staff it also lessens our impact on our community.

Studies have shown that car-sharing programs like Zipcar can have a positive environmental impact for three main reasons:

  • Members shed cars.
    • Over 40% of Zipcar members decide against purchasing a car, or end up selling their car. A Zipcar replaces more than 15 privately-owned cars.
  • Members drive less.
    • Car usage of individuals is reduced by as much as 50%.
  • Members use other transportation.
    • Members use the most efficient means of transportation for the task - walking, biking, public transportation, taxi or Zipcar.
