The following events at Worcester Polytechnic Institute may be of potential media interest.
Saxophonist Mike Monaghan will lead a Jazz Improvisation Clinic on Friday, Feb. 16, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Alden Memorial's Spaulding Recital Hall. Monaghan, lecturer in jazz and director of the Jazz Ensemble at the College of the Holy Cross, performs on soprano, alto and tenor saxophones, clarinet and flute. He has played with the Boston Pops and the Boston, Joffrey and Bolshoi ballets, and is a member of the Jazz Pops Ensemble, a jazz group of members of the Boston Pops Orchestra. He has performed with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, as well as with such jazz greats as Woody Herman, Mel Torme, Buddy Rich, Gerry Mulligan, Herb Pomeroy and Becky Parris. Monaghan is a clinician and resident guest artist at the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in Alaska.
On Sunday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m., in Spaulding Hall, jazz pianist Steve Kuhn will present a lecture and discussion in which he will compare the art climate in New York City in the 1960s and 1970s to the current climate. Kuhn is a New York-based jazz pianist. At 7 p.m. on Feb. 18, the Steve Kuhn Trio with vocalist Sheila Jordan will perform in Alden Memorial. Tickets are $8 (WPI students), $10 (other students) and $12 (public).
The Music Association and the WPI JazzGroup are presenting the clinics as part of their Jazz in Our Midst series. Each program is free and open to the public.
