Keum-Ran Choi, recipient of the Hughes Research Fellowship, is a doctoral candidate in fire protection engineering at WPI. She is shown at the Cone calorimeter, a state-of-the-art apparatus used for evaluating the burning characteristics of materials used in buildings and products. It generates material property data such as the rate of heat release, used in computer models of fire behavior.
