FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE/June 1, 2004
Contact: WPI Media Relations, 508-831-5706

What:

Students from more than 50 high schools around the northeast will compete and test their strategic skills and technical expertise in BattleCry@WPI V - one of the largest robotics competitions in New England. The event is hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and cosponsored by Raytheon Company Integrated Defense Systems.

Several 130-pound robots, joined by human players and supported by crews of drivers, controllers and strategists, will go head to head in intense, high-energy competitions. The robots will compete to perform specific tasks and will be judged on a variety of skills, such as engineering excellence, best offense, and best timed performance.

BattleCry is modeled after the FIRST robotic contests. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a multinational contest that challenges over 1,000 teams of professionals and young students to solve an engineering design problem. Teams build robots using a standard "kit of parts" and a common set of rules, and enter them in a series of competitions. FIRST was created by Segway entrepreneur Dean Kamen, who attended WPI, to inspire in young people, their schools and communities an appreciation of science and technology.
