WPI to Celebrate Social Awareness/Black History Month

WPI will observe Social Awareness/Black History Month in February with events sponsored by the offices of Diversity Programs and Women's Programs. Events, to be held at various locations throughout campus, include speakers, dinners, and workshops that focus on the culture and history of African Americans as well as other diverse communities.

Schedule

Feb. 1: Black History Month Kick-off Dinner at 5:30 p.m. in the Campus Center Odeum. Sponsored by GE, WPI's Office of Diversity Programs, and the Black Student Union. Tickets, $3.

Feb. 6: Lecture on the State of the Congo, noon to 1 p.m., Higgins House Great Hall.

Feb. 7: Greg Smith, "The Strength Coach," 6-8 p.m., Salisbury Labs, Room 115 (Kinnicutt Hall). Free admission.

Feb. 13: Brown Bag Luncheon Discussion on ethnic jokes and racial slurs, presented by Calvin R. Hill, WPI's director of Diversity Programs, noon to 1 p.m., Campus Center Hagglund Room.

Feb. 15: Coexist Day: Campus community members are encouraged to wear a "Coexist" shirt. Sponsored by the Offices of Diversity Programs & Women's Programs.

Feb. 21: Black History Dialogue, 7 p.m., in the Campus Center Hagglund Room. Sponsored by the WPI chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.

Feb. 21: Brown Bag Luncheon Discussion by Imad-ad-Dean Ahmad on Islam and the development of modern science, from noon to 1 p.m. in Higgins House Great Hall.
