Earth Week to be Celebrated at WPI

In keeping with the university's commitment to sustainability, WPI is holding a slate of activities April 18, 22, and 26 to celebrate Earth Week.

In keeping with the university's commitment to sustainability, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is holding a slate of activities to celebrate Earth Week.

Events

April 18

American Cancer Society fund-raiser Relay For Life starts.

  • Participate in overnight activities that will take place on the Quadrangle. A "Recycle-Olympics" will be held that evening.

April 22

Earth Day celebrations

  • 10-11 a.m., Salisbury Labs, Room 104 – State Rep. Robert Spellane, D-Worcester, will present a "Recyclemania" award to the winning residence hall that recycled the most waste during the past three months. He will also talk about sustainable energy.
  • Noon to 1 p.m., Salisbury Labs, Room 305 – WPI alum David Eger, designer and organizer of Analogous Design, will talk about "living buildings" and how to make structures more energy efficient, sustainable, and "green friendly." In addition, attendees will learn the value that the construction industry, entrepreneurs, and innovations have on economic strength.
  • 1-2 p.m., Salisbury Labs, Room 305 – Workshop on "Living Buildings."
  • 2-4 p.m., Gordon Library, first floor – Sustainability Poster Competition. WPI President and CEO Dennis D. Berkey will launch this event where students will present their sustainability-related project posters for a $250 prize. Projects will fall under two categories: technological responses to a problem associated with greening or sustainability; and interdisciplinary projects that focus on socio-technical dimensions of social or environmental sustainability.

April 26

  • Earth Day activities continue with
    12:30-4:30 p.m. – local park cleanup across the city of Worcester.
  • 8 p.m. – Movie on the Quadrangle, followed by the showing of the 30-minute documentary, "Wind Over Water."
