WPI to Host 200 Mathematicians at Regional American Mathematical Society Conference

More than 200 mathematicians from around the globe will be on the WPI campus April 25-26 as the university hosts the American Mathematical Society’s Spring Eastern Sectional Meeting. April is also the “Mathematics Awareness Month,” and the meeting will include a session on the mathematics of climate change, the special topic of the month.

April is ‘Mathematics Awareness Month’

What:

More than 200 mathematicians from around the globe will be on the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) campus April 25-26 as the university hosts the American Mathematical Society’s Spring Eastern Sectional Meeting. The latest research in fundamental mathematics as well as mathematical applications to biology, digital communications, fracture mechanics, dynamic materials, mathematical physics, and topological robotics will be presented. April is also the “Mathematics Awareness Month,” and the meeting will include a session on the mathematics of climate change, the special topic of the month.

WPI is a strong and active leader in mathematics and its applications. The Mathematical Sciences Department has active research in analysis, differential equations, numerical analysis, computational modeling, discrete mathematics, and statistics supported through grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, and Department of Education, from corporations and foundations. Through its Center for Industrial Mathematics and Statistics, students and faculty have worked on more than 65 industrial mathematics projects with business, government, and industry. The department supports BS, MS, and PhD programs in applied, financial, and industrial mathematics; and applied statistics.
