WPI Athletics Weekly Update (Week of 9/17/18 - 9/23/18)

Bridget Sullivan scored the game-winning goal with 7:59 to play as Field Hockey posted a 2-1 triumph over visiting Conn. College Wednesday night in Alumni Stadium  Both WPI goals were a result of penalty corners. The first was a pass from Sullivan to Angie Ferro at 48:41. The decisive tally was setup by Abby O'Sullivan who sent the ball across the box to Sullivan.  On Friday WPI defeated Becker and is now 7-0 on the season. It is the Engineers best start since going 18-0 heading into the 1992 NCAA tournament. 



Colleen Mullins narrowly missed a double-double with 14 kills and nine digs as Volleyball went on the road to collect its first NEWMAC win of the season, a 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-14) triumph over host Smith, Tuesday night inside Ainsworth Gymnasium. Abbie Gilbert and Sarah Kwatinetz each smashed six kills while Gilbert and Kassidy Utheim combined for nine block assists. On Saturday versus Wellesley, Azita Bakhtyari handed out 49 assists to reach 2,000 in her career and Casey Hunt totaled 24 digs to surpass the 1,000 career milestone.



Michael Brady led the Men's Cross cCuntry team to an eighth-place finish at the Purple Valley Classic, hosted by Williams at Mount Greylock High School.  Brady delivered a 30th-place 26:43.8 as Tom Hanlon was nine spots behind with a time of 27:02.  Sydney Packard was sixth overall, and fourth amongst NEWMAC runners, to pace Women's Cross Country team in a ninth-place showing.  Packard handed in a 6K time of 23:04.1 while sophomore Keely Nistler was the next Boynton Hiller to cross the finish line with a 47th-place 24:25.6.



Ben Rickson registered a goal and Rufus Adams made six saves as Men’s Soccer played to a 1-1 double overtime draw with NEWMAC rival MIT. WPI, ranked fourth in most recent United Soccer Coaches New England top 10 and receiving votes in the a pair of national top 25 polls, is now 5-1-2 overall and 0-0-2 in conference action. 



Sean McAllen was been tabbed as last week's Division II/III recipient of the New England Football Writers Association Gold Helmet Award presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation. McAllen, a graduate of Woodland High School, rushed for 160 yards on just 16 carries and accounted for four touchdowns last weekend in a 45-0 shutout of Becker.



Join us Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday for home contests this week.  Men’s Soccer entertains Roger Williams at 7pm on Wednesday while Volleyball hosts Salve Regina at the same time on Thursday.  Two for the price of one on Saturday when Women’s Soccer squares off with Smith and Volleyball tangles with Emerson with both events starting at 1pm.  Road action this week features Field Hockey at Lasell on Tuesday and Springfield on Saturday, Football at Maine Maritime on Saturday and Men’s and Women’s Rowing beginning their 2018 fall season in the Riverfront Regatta in Hartford.

Men’s Student-Athlete of the Week

Blayne Merchant - Football - Senior - Sanderson, FL

Blayne Merchant from the football team has been tabbed as the WPI Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, September 23rd. Merchant tied his career-high with 10 solo tackles and his regular season career-best of 12 total stops Saturday versus Springfield. He also blocked a punt to give the Engineers great field position, which led to the first score of the game with just under five minutes to play in the first quarter.

 

 

 

Women’s Student-Athlete of the Week

Azita Bakhtyari - Volleyball - Senior - Andover, MA

Azita Bakhtyari of the volleyball team has been named as the WPI Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, September 23rd. Bakhtyari was one of two Engineers to reach milestones in Saturday’s match at Wellesley. After doling out 30 assists at Smith, the senior handed out a season-best 49 to exceed 2,000 for her career as the upset-minded Crimson and Gray were on the wrong end of a five-set thriller.
