BME/Robotics Faculty CandidateMedical robotics has been used in many areas including surgical assistance to allow surgical operations to be carried out with higher precision and less fatigue, and teleoperation to enable a surgeon to conduct remote surgery without requiring their physical presence with the patient. Medical imaging has evolved rapidly with medical robotics over the past two decades, focused towards more minimally invasive, personalized, and low-risk diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. To broaden the impact of medical robotics and imaging, I have developed enabling technologies and explored associated translational applications, where ultrasound and photoacoustic (PA) imaging are two key modalities. In this talk, I will focus on two of these technologies: (1) a co-robotic ultrasound system, and (2) functional PA imaging. By introducing a robotic paradigm to ultrasound, I aimed to reduce user-dependency in ultrasound scanning and to build an image with higher resolution and contrast. In addition, PA imaging delineates electrophysiological and molecular contrast of brain and cancer, and could be used for multimodal surgical guidance with high sensitivity and specificity. These systems synergistically improve both image quality and surgical accuracy/specificity towards diagnostic and interventional applications.
Dr. Haichong “Kai” Zhang is a postdoctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Computational Sensing and Robotics at The Johns Hopkins University. He received a B.S. and a M.S. in Human Health Sciences from Kyoto University, Japan in 2011 and 2013, respectively. After completing his master’s degree, he joined the Medical Ultrasound Imaging and Intervention Collaboration (MUSiiC) Laboratory at The Johns Hopkins University, and received a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2015 and 2017, respectively. His research interests include advanced robotic instrumentation and imaging with emphasis on ultrasound and photoacoustics for biomedical applications. He has authored more than forty refereed scientific publications including journals and conference proceedings, and five pending/issued patents.
