An Evening With Dickens

Floor/Room #:

In celebration of extraordinary gifts to WPI of works by and about Charles Dickens, WPI will be hosting a special Evening with Dickens on Tuesday, March 31, 2020 from 4-7pm.  Speakers and special guests at the event include Daniel Ryan, who with his wife Alice have established a bequest of their collection to benefit WPI; and Michael Slater, a renowned Dickens scholar and author of an "incomparable" and "indispensable" biography of Charles Dickens.

The event will also commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of Charles Dickens on June 9, 1870, and the 50th anniversary of the WPI Plan, a bold experiment that brings students and faculty face to face with the human dimensions of technological problems, through engagement with the humanities and arts as well as social, global, and cultural understanding.

Currently on view in Gordon Library's Gladwin Gallery until October 2020 is Illustrating Every-day Life: Dickens and his Artists.  This exhibition features more than twenty original works of art from Dickens' illustrators along with special editions of his novels.  Dickens developed close relationships with his illustrators and was intimately involved in choosing and shaping the visual images used in his works. Highlights of the exhibit include materials from the Robert D. Fellman collection on Charles Dickens, as well as unique items on loan from the collection of Daniel and Alice Ryan.
