The Global School Virtual Event Series is a year long celebration of The Global School at WPI and aims to highlight and grow the projects, research, and collaborations WPI has all over the world while focusing on global grand challenge themes.

This event featured two keynote talks: an interview with Mele Wendt, MNZM from Wellington New Zealand and a talk from WPI Assistant Professor Holger Droessler. Sessions also discuss WPI's existing project centers in the region and topics including climate change, nature and society, and indigeneity.

Oceania – Identity, Challenges, and Opportunities: An Interview with Mele Wendt, MNZM
Mele Wendt will discuss Oceania as a region, the challenges and opportunities it faces, and the strengths that its diverse peoples bring to these challenges. Mele grew up on Samoa and Fiji and has spent most of her adult life in New Zealand, working in the education sector with the Pacific community and serving as Executive Director for Fulbright New Zealand from 2005 to 2015. In 2019 Mele was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for her service to governance, the Pacific Community, and women. 


 

Sea of Islands: An Introduction to the History of Oceania
This presentation will offer an introduction to the epic history of Oceania from first human settlement 5,000 years ago to current political organizing to combat climate change.
