The Graduate Commencement Ceremony for all master's and doctoral candidates will take place on May 11 in a separate ceremony to recognize the growing stature of the Institute’s graduate programs, which have expanded substantially—in size, diversity, and international recognition—since WPI awarded its first master’s degrees in 1898 and its first PhD in 1960. Last year more than 750 graduate degrees were conferred.
Graduate Ceremony and Academic Costume
Today’s Commencement exercises are a modern recreation of a ceremony that dates back to the Middle Ages. The pageantry of the academic procession and of the degree-granting ceremony, and the dignity and color of the academic gowns, are a reminder of the long tradition of the college.
