    Smart World Research and Teaching

Some of the most exciting work on some of the grandest challenges facing our world takes place at blurred boundaries—of disciplines and of teaching and research. A new, state-of-the-art facility, focused on the smart world, will advance our ability to achieve interdisciplinary, translational research breakthroughs by enabling collaborative research and teaching among the computational sciences: data science, robotics, cybersecurity, autonomous vehicles, learning sciences and technology, interactive media and game development, bioinformatics, computational biology, neuroscience/engineering, architectural engineering, and smart design.

This new building will also house an integrated Student Academic Services Center for our campus, aimed at assisting students in selecting their academic path, in supporting academic success, and in career planning and development to help deliver on the promise of a WPI education.

You are invited to learn about this new facility and celebrate the philanthropy that is making it possible—including a challenge grant from the George I. Alden Trust.

    ABOUT COL Diane M. Ryan

COL Diane M. Ryan attended the College of the Holy Cross and was commissioned through the Bay State Battalion Army ROTC program in 1988, as a Signal Officer.

COL Ryan began her career as a platoon leader in the 440th Signal Battalion, deploying in support of OPERATION DESERT STORM and later TASK FORCE VICTORY.  After serving as a Company Commander in the 82d Signal Battalion, she was accepted into Functional Area 39 as a Psychological Operations (PSYOP) Officer, where she served as the Operations Officer for the 8th PSYOP Battalion.

Following graduation from the Command and General Staff College, COL Ryan returned to the Signal Corps.  She served as the III (US) Corps G6 Force Modernization Officer; S3 of the 13th Signal Battalion; and eventually deployed to Baghdad, Iraq for OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM II as the 1st Cavalry Division’s Deputy G6. During this deployment, COL Ryan worked extensively with civil society building non-governmental agencies and founded a partnership to support women in the Iraqi Army.  Prior to leaving for her graduate program, COL Ryan served as 1st Cavalry Division’s Deputy Chief of Staff.

COL Ryan holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology;  masters’ degrees in International Relations from Troy University and Strategic Studies from the Army War College; and a PhD in Social and Community Psychology from North Carolina State University. Her doctoral dissertation focused on how gender and egalitarian attitudes of military personnel can empower local women and facilitate peaceful solutions.

Upon receiving her PhD, COL Ryan joined the faculty in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership (BSL) at the United States Military Academy.  During her tenure at West Point, COL Ryan taught nine different classes and directed three academic

programs.  After graduating from the Army War College, she served as the BSL Deputy Department Head and Director of the Eisenhower Leader Development Program until her retirement in 2017.

Following her retirement from the Army, COL Ryan became the Associate Dean for Programs and Administration for the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University. The mission of Tisch College is to prepare students for a lifetime of engagement in civic life, to study civic life and its intersections with public and private institutions, and to promote practices that strengthen civic life in the United States and around the world.
